A yard you can’t dig up

Some yards have landscaping that’s hard to replace. This Littleton front yard held the homeowner’s collection of vintage automobiles. Digging a trench for a traditional sewer repair would have meant moving the whole collection and tearing up the ground it sat on. Excavation was off the table from the start. Trenchless sewer lining from inside the house was the way to fix this Littleton line.

Cracked clay under the collection

The sewer lateral was 4-inch vitrified clay, and it had cracked along its run. Clay pipe tends to fail at the joints and along stress cracks as the ground shifts over the years. Even so, it often keeps enough of its shape to be a strong candidate for trenchless pipe lining.

Jetting first, then lining from indoors

Any liner is only as good as the pipe surface it bonds to. Our crew started with hydro jetting, which cleared out the buildup and debris and left the clay walls clean. Then we worked from inside the house. We ran a cured-in-place pipe liner the full 72 feet and cured it into a seamless new sewer line. Nothing in the yard was disturbed, and not a single car had to be moved.

When the surface can’t be touched
